OpenAI Codex Sites: Build and Host Websites, Dashboards, and Tools from a Prompt
On June 2, 2026, OpenAI unveiled a new feature that fundamentally changes how websites are created: Codex Sites. You describe what you need in natural language -- and the AI builds a working website that goes live instantly and is shareable via link.
What is Codex Sites?
Codex is OpenAI's AI agent for software development. Previously, it was a separate tool for writing, analyzing, and testing code. With the new Sites feature, OpenAI takes a decisive step further: Codex now not only generates code but also hosts the result directly -- on an OpenAI URL via Cloudflare. The result is a finished web app you can immediately share with colleagues, clients, or your team.
What you can build:
The key advantage of Sites: you do not need programming skills. You describe what you want, and Codex does the rest. Some examples:
- Internal dashboards: 'Create a dashboard that visualizes our sales data from this CSV file as bar charts and time series'
- Project management tools: 'Build a Kanban board with To-Do, In Progress, and Done columns where I can drag and drop tasks'
- Calculators: 'Create a salary calculator that computes gross-to-net'
- Event pages: 'Build a registration page for our company event with date, program, and sign-up form'
- Interactive presentations: 'Turn these bullet points into an interactive website with animations and navigation'
20% of users are not developers
A surprising figure from OpenAI's announcement: of the over 5 million weekly Codex users, 20% are not software developers -- they are analysts, marketing professionals, designers, and project managers. This shows: Codex Sites is not a developer tool but a productivity tool for anyone who needs something functional fast.
Codex is coming directly to ChatGPT
The second major news: in the coming weeks, Codex will be integrated directly into the ChatGPT app. Previously, users had to switch between ChatGPT and Codex. Soon, you will be able to say 'Create a website for...' in a normal ChatGPT conversation -- and Codex takes over in the background.
Six new business plugins
Simultaneously, OpenAI announced six specialized plugins for businesses:
- Jira -- Project management integration
- Confluence -- Knowledge base connection
- Salesforce -- Use CRM data
- Asana -- Task management
- Figma -- Analyze and implement design files
- Slack -- Team communication integration
These plugins allow Codex to access company data directly and generate websites, reports, or tools from it.
Availability and pricing:
- Codex Sites: Currently in preview for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise. Broader rollout announced
- Codex in ChatGPT: Rolling out to all ChatGPT users in the coming weeks
- Business plugins: Available for Business and Enterprise customers
- Cost: Codex usage is included in existing ChatGPT plans -- with different usage limits depending on your plan
- Hosting: Sites are hosted free of charge on OpenAI infrastructure
- International: No regional restrictions known -- Codex is available wherever ChatGPT is available
Practical example: Internal dashboard in 5 minutes
1. Open ChatGPT or Codex
2. Upload a CSV or Excel file with your data
3. Describe: 'Create an interactive dashboard with filter options by quarter and region. Show revenue as a line chart and top 10 products as a bar chart.'
4. Codex builds the page and you get a link
5. Share the link with your team -- no installation, no login required
What used to require a developer and a few days is now done in minutes.
Limitations:
- Not a replacement for professional websites: Sites is suited for internal tools, prototypes, and simple web apps -- not for complex e-commerce shops or data-intensive platforms
- OpenAI hosting: Your site lives on OpenAI servers. For sensitive company data, check whether this is compatible with your compliance requirements
- Still in preview: Feature scope and stability may still change
- No custom domain: Created sites run on an OpenAI URL -- custom domains are not supported yet
What this means for you:
Codex Sites radically lowers the barrier to creating web applications. You no longer need a developer to build a quick dashboard, form, or internal tool. This is especially valuable for:
- Small business owners: Quickly create a landing page or booking tool
- Teams: Internal dashboards and project tools without the IT department
- Freelancers: Portfolio pages or client portals in minutes
- Anyone with an idea: From idea to working web app in a single chat
Three things you can do now:
- Try it out: If you have ChatGPT Plus or Pro, test Codex now -- ChatGPT integration is coming soon
- Collect ideas: Think about which internal tools or dashboards you always wanted but never had the resources to build
- Mind privacy: Before using company data in Codex Sites, check with your IT department whether hosting at OpenAI is acceptable
