Midjourney V8.1: 5x Faster, 2K Resolution by Default, and New Draft Mode -- What Changes for You
You type a prompt into Midjourney, wait 30 seconds, get four images -- and none of them match what you had in mind. So you try again, wait again, still not quite right. After ten rounds, you might have one image that works. The rest was waiting time.
What changed?
With V8.1 becoming the default model on June 10, 2026, Midjourney has solved three problems at once: speed, resolution, and the creative search process.
1. Up to 5x faster generation
Standard images now generate in about 4 seconds instead of the previous 15-20 seconds. This sounds like a small difference but fundamentally changes how you work: you can now iterate in real time. Adjust your prompt, see the result, refine further -- without constant thinking pauses caused by wait times.
For anyone using Midjourney professionally -- designers, content creators, marketers -- this means significantly more results per hour. What used to take half a day now fits into one hour.
2. 2K resolution as standard (HD Mode)
V8.1 delivers images at 2K resolution by default -- that is four times the pixel count compared to V7 images. You no longer need to upscale separately to get usable results.
What does this mean in practice?
- Social media: Images are immediately sharp enough for Instagram, LinkedIn, and others -- no upscaling needed
- Presentations: Images look good even on large screens
- Print: For smaller formats (flyers, business cards), the resolution is sufficient right away
- Web: Product images, hero images, and blog posts get print-ready quality immediately
For larger print formats (posters, banners), you can still use the upscaler -- but for most everyday applications, you can skip that step entirely.
3. New Draft Mode: 24 variations at once
This is the most exciting innovation for the creative process. Draft Mode generates 24 images at low resolution for a single prompt -- at half the price of a normal image.
Why is this so useful?
- Creative exploration: Instead of seeing four images and guessing whether a different direction would be better, you immediately see 24 interpretations of your prompt
- Style search: You find out faster which aesthetic fits your project
- Prompt optimization: You immediately see how Midjourney interprets your prompt and can steer more precisely
- Budget-friendly: Since draft images cost only half, you can experiment twice as much
The typical workflow now looks like this:
1. Enter prompt in Draft Mode (24 variations)
2. Identify the 2-3 best directions
3. Render those favorites at full 2K quality
4. Apply variations or upscaling as needed
Instead of iterating blindly, you now make informed decisions.
4. Better text rendering
V8.1 can render text in images much more reliably. Text on posters, logos, signs, or text on product packaging -- everything comes out cleaner and more legible than in previous versions. It is not perfect yet, but for simple text elements, it is often good enough without post-processing.
5. Better prompt adherence
More detailed prompts are now executed more accurately. When you give specific instructions about lighting, perspective, materials, or composition, V8.1 follows them significantly better than V7. This reduces the number of attempts until you get what you envisioned.
Pricing and availability:
- Basic: 10 USD/month -- approx. 200 images/month
- Standard: 30 USD/month -- unlimited relaxed generations, 15 hours Fast Mode
- Pro: 60 USD/month -- 30 hours Fast Mode, Stealth Mode for private images
- Mega: 120 USD/month -- 60 hours Fast Mode
- V8.1 is the default model -- you do not need to change any settings. All existing subscribers use it automatically
- Access: Via Discord, the Midjourney website (midjourney.com), or the mobile app
Privacy note:
- Public images: On Basic and Standard plans, all generated images are publicly visible in the Midjourney gallery by default. Stealth Mode for private images is only available starting from the Pro plan
- Prompt visibility: Your prompts are also publicly visible unless you use Stealth Mode. Be cautious with sensitive project descriptions or company internals in prompts
- Training data: Midjourney uses generated images and prompts to improve its model. Usage for model training can be restricted in the settings
- Server location: Processing takes place on US servers, which is relevant for GDPR-sensitive use cases
Practical tips for switching:
- Try Draft Mode first: Add the `--draft` parameter to your next prompt and look at the 24 variations before generating at full quality
- Use more detailed prompts: V8.1 understands longer, more specific instructions better than V7. Describe lighting, mood, perspective, and materials
- Text in images: Keep text short (1-3 words work best) and use quotation marks in your prompt: `a poster with the text 'Sale'`
- Test old prompts: Run your proven prompts through V8.1 -- the results are often significantly better without changing anything
Who benefits from this update?
Since V8.1 is automatically the default model, all Midjourney users benefit immediately. The speed improvement is especially valuable for anyone who regularly generates images: content creators who need daily social media graphics, designers creating concepts and mood boards, marketers who want to quickly test visual ideas, and bloggers and writers who need article images.
Draft Mode also makes Midjourney significantly more accessible for beginners: instead of giving up in frustration after four images, you immediately see the range of possibilities and learn faster how to formulate prompts.
