Claude Projects: Stop Copy-Pasting Context Forever
Anyone who uses Claude regularly knows the ritual: you start a new chat and paste in three paragraphs of context first — who you are, what you do, what tone you want, which examples apply. Every single time. For every topic. Projects solves exactly this problem — and many people still don't use the feature properly.
What Claude Projects can do:
- Own knowledge base per project: Upload up to 200,000 tokens of documents (PDF, Word, Markdown, code). Claude knows this content in every chat inside the project — without you having to attach it again.
- Custom instructions per project: Define role, style, language, rules once — applies to all chats in the project.
- Clean separation: One project for your job application, one for the blog, one for client X. No mix-up, no chaos in the chat history.
- Team sharing (Team plan and up): Colleagues can share the same project, with the same documents and rules.
3 concrete setups that pay off immediately:
1. Project 'My Company': Upload — mission statement, tone guide, FAQ, existing product descriptions. Custom instruction: 'Always write in the 'we' voice, no marketing speak, max sentence length 20 words.' Result: Every text sounds consistent, whether it is a social post or a customer email.
2. Project 'Job Application 2026': Upload — your CV, your 3 best project descriptions, the job ad. Custom instruction: 'You are my application coach. Focus: STAR method, concrete numbers, no filler phrases.' Result: Cover letters in 10 minutes instead of 60 — and Claude knows your real background.
3. Project 'Research [topic]': Upload — the 5-10 most important articles/PDFs you have read. Custom instruction: 'Answer ONLY based on the uploaded documents. If something is missing, say so openly.' Result: AI answers based on YOUR sources — not on hallucinated internet knowledge.
How to set up a project (5 minutes):
1. In claude.ai click 'Projects' -> 'Create Project' on the left
2. Name + short description
3. Write custom instructions (3-5 sentences are enough — role, style, rules)
4. Upload documents under 'Project knowledge'
5. Start a new chat inside the project — Claude has the full context instantly
⚠️ Privacy note (important!): Project documents are stored on Anthropic servers. For Claude Pro/Max the rule is: according to Anthropic, your content is not used for training by default (that sets Anthropic apart from many competitors). Still:
- Do not upload client data, health data, or real customer data without a data processing agreement (DPA) in place.
- In professional use: choose the Team/Enterprise plan — stricter data processing rules with DPA option apply there.
- Anonymization is always the safer choice: instead of 'Anna Meyer, born 12/03/1985' use 'Customer A, mid-40s'.
The practical benefit: Once you use Claude with your own knowledge base, you won't go back to the empty chat. You no longer ask Claude questions — you ask YOUR Claude questions. That is the difference between a generic AI assistant and a tool that actually fits your context.
