Claude for Microsoft 365: AI Directly Inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Since May 7, 2026, Claude is officially integrated into Microsoft 365. The add-ins for Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are generally available, while Outlook is in public beta. You install them via the Microsoft Marketplace and can use Claude directly inside your Office documents — no more switching between windows.
The key differentiator: Context across all apps
This is the biggest advantage over copy-pasting into a separate chat. Claude retains context as you switch between apps. A concrete example:
1. You open an email in Outlook with a proposal
2. You open the attachment (an Excel spreadsheet) — Claude already knows the context from the email
3. You have Claude analyze the numbers in Excel
4. You switch to PowerPoint — Claude creates a summary as a presentation
All without re-explaining anything. If you change an assumption in Excel, Claude can automatically update related content in other open apps.
What Claude can do in each app:
- Excel: Reads across multiple worksheets, answers questions about formulas and cells, updates assumptions without breaking existing formulas. Answers include direct cell references as citations.
- Word: Edits text in 'suggested edits' mode — Claude's changes appear as tracked revisions (deletions and insertions). Perfect for contract redlining or text revision.
- PowerPoint: Creates slides using the correct layouts, fonts, and colors from the slide master. Your template is respected.
- Outlook (Beta): Email triage and processing email content as part of the cross-app workflow.
How to set it up:
1. Open the Microsoft Marketplace (AppSource) and search for 'Claude for Microsoft 365'
2. There are two listings: one for Excel/Word/PowerPoint and one for Outlook
3. Click Install and sign in with your Claude account
4. The add-in appears in the sidebar of your Office apps
Requirement: A paid Claude subscription (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise). No additional cost beyond the existing subscription. The free Claude plan is not supported.
Where it really pays off:
- Spreadsheet analysis: Instead of scrolling through 20 Excel tabs yourself, ask Claude: 'Which cost items increased by more than 10% in Q2?'
- Contract work: Claude marks edit suggestions as Track Changes — you review them like you would from a human colleague
- Presentations: Results from Excel directly as formatted slides in your corporate design
- Email triage: Claude helps prioritize and summarize long email threads
Privacy note:
On Pro and Team plans, your data may be used for training by default — you can disable this in settings. Enterprise accounts do not train on your data. For sensitive business data, the Enterprise plan is recommended. Claude is not HIPAA compliant on consumer accounts.
Administrators can centrally manage the add-ins via the Microsoft Admin Center and control access — just like any other M365 add-in.
Bottom line: The M365 integration solves a real problem: using AI without constantly switching context between a chat window and your work environment. The cross-app context persistence in particular sets Claude apart from simple sidebar assistants.
