Search ChatGPT: Find All Chats, Files, and Images in One Click

Since July 14, 2026, ChatGPT has a universal search function. In the sidebar, you will find a search bar that searches across everything:

- All conversations (chat history, no matter how old)
- Uploaded files (PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets)
- Images (generated and uploaded)
- Projects (including all chats and files within them)

You can filter results by type: chats only, files only, images only. This works on web, iOS, and Android and is available across all plans, including the free tier.

You asked ChatGPT to research a topic and want to re-read the results? Search for the keyword instead of looking for the conversation among hundreds of entries.

3. Find uploaded documents
You had a PDF analyzed last week and need the summary? The search finds both the document and the associated conversation.

4. Use Projects more efficiently
Those who use the Projects feature in ChatGPT benefit especially: the search goes across all projects, chats, and files. You no longer need to remember which project a particular conversation was in.

Tips for searching:

- Use specific terms: 'cover letter marketing' finds results more precisely than just 'cover letter'
- Use filters: If you know you are looking for an image, filter by images to narrow the results
- Establish your own convention: Give important chats a short title or keyword as a reference at the end, for example: 'Please name this chat Tax-Return-2026'. This makes searching even easier later
- Do not delete old chats: Now there is a reason to keep chats rather than clean up. The more conversations you have, the more valuable the search function becomes

Limitations:

- The search covers the text of your messages and ChatGPT's responses, but not the full text of uploaded PDFs. You can find a PDF via its filename or the context of the conversation where you uploaded it
- The search is currently a full-text search, not a semantic search. You find matches for exact words, not semantically related terms
