ChatGPT Tasks: How to Let AI Work for You — Even at Night
Most people use ChatGPT as a pure question-and-answer tool — yet since early 2025 it can also run scheduled jobs. The feature is called Tasks and is available on the Plus, Pro, and Team plans. Many users still don't know it exists.
What Tasks can do:
You formulate a task once — ChatGPT then executes it either once at a specific time or on a recurring schedule (daily, weekly, monthly). The result arrives as a notification and also shows up in your chat history, so nothing gets lost.
Concrete examples that save time immediately:
- Daily morning briefing (7:30 AM): 'Summarize the 5 most important AI news items of the last 24 hours, in English, with sources.'
- Weekly meeting prep (Sunday 6 PM): 'Remind me of my goals for this quarter and ask me 3 reflection questions about the past week.'
- One-time deadline reminder: 'Remind me on April 15th at 9 AM to send the final report for client X — including a checklist of the 5 most important points.'
- Monthly budget review (1st of the month): 'Ask me whether I met my financial goals last month and suggest one concrete action for the new month.'
How to set it up:
1. Simply write in a new chat: 'Remind me every Monday at 8 AM to ...' — ChatGPT detects the time reference and creates a task automatically.
2. Alternatively, select GPT-4o with scheduled tasks directly at the top of the chat.
3. Manage all tasks under Profile -> Tasks: you can pause, edit, or delete them there.
⚠️ Privacy note: Tasks store your instruction permanently on OpenAI servers and run at the scheduled time automatically — even after you closed the chat long ago. What this means:
- Do not put sensitive company data, passwords, or client information into recurring tasks.
- Actively disable old tasks you no longer need (otherwise they keep running unnoticed and consume context).
- In a professional setting: check whether your employer allows ChatGPT Tasks at all — many data protection policies exclude automated cloud agents.
The practical benefit: Tasks turn ChatGPT into a small personal assistant that thinks ahead without you having to take action every time. Once you have set up a daily news briefing or a Sunday-evening reflection, you understand the difference: The AI comes to you, not the other way around. That is exactly what makes it fit for everyday life — instead of having to open it from scratch every single time.
