Weekend Challenge: AI Travel Planning — Plan Your Perfect Vacation in 20 Minutes
Summer is around the corner, and you want to travel. But the planning? It eats up hours. You dig through travel blogs, compare hotels across five tabs, scroll through Instagram recommendations, and end up with twenty open browser tabs — but no plan.
The problem: Travel planning is an information jungle. Guidebooks are generic, blogger recommendations are often sponsored, and the best tips are nowhere to be found — because they come from locals who do not write blogs. You do not need another guidebook. You need a personal travel advisor who knows your preferences, respects your budget, and recommends places that are not in every tourist guide.
The good news: AI can be exactly that. It knows thousands of destinations, can structure daily itineraries, and adapts everything to your wishes — whether backpacking on 50 euros a day or a luxury spa vacation.
The task (20 minutes, 3 phases):
Phase 1 — Create your travel profile (5 min)
Most travel planners fail because they do not know what they want. This prompt helps you figure that out. Copy it and fill in the placeholders:
'You are my personal travel advisor — experienced, creative, and honest. You do not suggest tourist traps and you tell me openly if an idea does not suit me.
My travel profile:
- Travel dates: [e.g. July 15-22, 2026]
- Budget per person: [e.g. 800 euros excluding flights / 1500 euros all-inclusive]
- Travelers: [e.g. couple without kids / family with 2 children (ages 5 and 8) / solo]
- Transportation: [e.g. flight from Frankfurt / car from Munich / prefer train]
- Accommodation: [e.g. hotel / vacation rental / camping / anything clean]
What I enjoy:
- [e.g. nature and hiking, but no extreme tours]
- [e.g. good food and discovering local cuisine]
- [e.g. culture, but not ten museums a day]
- [e.g. swimming/beach is a must]
What I do NOT enjoy:
- [e.g. mass tourism and overcrowded beaches]
- [e.g. long car rides with children]
- [e.g. tightly scheduled days without free time]
Special requirements:
- [e.g. bringing our dog / vegetarian food important / accessible accommodations needed / allergies]
Based on this profile: Suggest 3 destinations that are a perfect match. For each destination, provide:
1. Why it suits me (2 sentences)
2. Best argument in favor
3. Biggest drawback (be honest!)
4. Approximate cost per person
5. How crowded it is during my travel dates (1-5 stars, 5 = overcrowded)
Surprise me with at least one destination I probably have not thought of.'
Choose the destination that appeals to you most and move to Phase 2.
Phase 2 — Daily plan with insider tips (10 min)
Now it gets concrete. Copy this prompt:
'I am going with [YOUR CHOSEN DESTINATION]. Create a detailed travel plan for me.
Daily planning:
For each day, create a schedule with:
- Morning / Afternoon / Evening (no rigid times, flexible blocks instead)
- For each activity: What, Where, Why it is worth it, approximate duration
- Mix of highlights and hidden gems (50/50 ratio)
- At least one restaurant recommendation per day with a dish you absolutely must try there
- Built-in buffer time — no stress tourism
Insider tip rules:
- No places that appear in every guidebook top 10
- Instead: Where do locals go? What do only people who live there know?
- At least one hidden gem restaurant, one secret spot, and one unusual activity
Weather check:
- What is the weather typically like during my travel dates?
- Do I have a bad-weather Plan B for each day?
Budget overview:
- Estimated daily costs: food, activities, local transport
- Money-saving tips that locals know (affordable lunch specials, free activities, discount cards)
- Where is it worth spending more, and where can I save?
Format the plan so I can print it and take it with me.'
Review the plan and refine it:
'Please adjust the travel plan:
- [e.g. Day 3 is too packed — add more free time]
- [e.g. Fewer museums, more nature]
- [e.g. I need kid-friendly restaurants]
- [e.g. Add a day hike]'
Phase 3 — Checklists and emergency info (5 min)
The part everyone forgets — until it is too late:
'Create three practical lists for my trip to [DESTINATION]:
1. Packing list:
- Adapted to weather, activities, and trip length
- Divided into: clothing, tech, documents, travel pharmacy, miscellaneous
- Mark the items people most commonly forget
- What can I buy cheaper on location rather than hauling along?
2. Essential info at a glance:
- Emergency numbers at the destination
- Nearest hospital / pharmacy at the vacation spot
- Do I need travel health insurance?
- Special traffic rules (if driving)
- Tipping customs
- Important phrases in the local language (5 sentences that actually help)
- Payment: cash needed or cards accepted everywhere?
3. Pre-departure checklist:
- What do I need to book in advance? (with recommendation: how far ahead?)
- Documents: passport, ID card, driver license — what do I need?
- Prepare the apartment: trash, mail, plants, fridge
- Digital prep: download offline maps, save important numbers'
Why this works: Guidebooks are written for millions of people — this plan is written for YOU. AI can factor in your profile (budget, interests, constraints) in real time and create a plan that fits you better than any standardized guidebook.
Important note: AI travel recommendations are a fantastic starting point, but verify specific details like opening hours, current prices, and whether a restaurant still exists. AI models can have outdated or inaccurate information. Use the plan as a framework and quickly verify the details online.
Get even more out of it:
- Photo spots: 'Where are the best photo locations that not everyone knows? What time of day is the light best?'
- Culinary route: 'Create a food tour through [city] — from breakfast to nightcap, only local specialties'
- Emergency scenario: 'What do I do if my flight is canceled / I lose my passport / I get sick?'
- Next time: 'What should I do on a second visit that did not fit the first time?'
Pro tip: Save your entire chat history with the travel plan. During your trip, you can ask anytime: 'I am currently in [place] and it is raining — what can I do nearby?' or 'The restaurant is closed — is there an alternative on the same street?' AI becomes your real-time travel companion.
Your learning outcome: You learned how to use AI as a customized travel planner. Instead of spending hours searching through travel blogs, you created a complete, personalized travel plan in 20 minutes — with insider tips, budget overview, and practical checklists. This method works for any trip: from a weekend getaway to a three-week road trip.
Challenge
Choose a real destination for your next vacation (or a dream trip). Have AI suggest three matching destinations, pick one, and create a detailed daily itinerary with insider tips, budget overview, and restaurant recommendations. To finish: a personalized packing list and pre-departure checklist. Bonus: Create a culinary route through your destination — from breakfast to nightcap.
